I picked up a Japan retail pressing of Mike And The Mechanics to replace my USA Columbia CD Club version. This is also an opportunity to use the new spectrum feature of my CD Waveform utility, that will display differences in frequency, whereas before, the only thing that could be derived is differences in amplitude.
The USA version (DIDX) is hotter by a little bit, and to be honest, I’m still not sure how to interpret the spectrum graph. You can see the Japan pressing in green actually has more upper-mid range frequencies, despite being lower amplitude. This is sort of consistent with another experience I had on another album where the US version was a bit more boomy. Only a real A/B test would prove this out.
